About epochs, eras and dates
One of the most important fact family historians research are dates. Dates assist us in finding the missing piece to the puzzle, so that we can reconstruct family structures long forgotten.
Dates also help us analyse our research result by putting the data into the proper time context. Understanding how people lived in the past and their particular era, can shed new light on family lore and lead to new insights and conclusions.
Most family historians won't be able trace their family back beyond the late Middle Ages, as record keeping in Europe began around 1500. Many will even have problems finding traces of their families beyond 1800. Understanding the time epochs will help understand research limitations as well.
